Why should you fly to Madeira?
Madeira is a popular tourist destination, known for its mild climate, lush vegetation, wine production and cultural heritage. It is also a challenging place to fly to, due to its location right on a cliff line, the lack of instrument landing system and the steep turn before the final approach.
Funchal Madeira airport (LPMA) is considered one of the most difficult airports in the world to land at, especially in windy conditions. The runway was extended in 2000 with a platform over the ocean, supported by 180 columns. The runway length is now 2781 meters, but it still requires precise skills and judgment from the pilots.
Porto Santo airport (LPPS) is the oldest airport of the archipelago, opened in 1960. It has a runway length of 3000 meters and a simpler approach than Funchal. However, it can also be affected by crosswinds and turbulence.
